Honest Comparison

Circle 7
vs Snake River Farms.

An honest side-by-side from the brand that competes with them. Where they win. Where we win. Where neither is the right answer. Picked apart by category so you can decide on your kitchen, not on marketing.

Snake River Farms (snakeriverfarms.com) is the most recognizable American Wagyu DTC brand. They've been at it since 1968 through their parent Agri Beef, they have great cuts, and if you've heard of one ranch-direct wagyu brand, it's probably theirs. We've been at it since 2026. We're a single ranch in Mt. Pleasant, Utah. We make this comparison because most "vs" pages get written by aggregator sites with no skin in the game. This one's written by the brand that competes with them, with the honest places we lose and the honest places we win.

The 30-second take

Pick Snake River Farms if: you want the brand the food magazines write about, you only want American Wagyu or Kurobuta, and you don't care about half-cow shares, lamb, or knowing the specific ranch your beef came from.

Pick Circle 7 if: you want six categories from a single ranch (Black Angus + F1 Wagyu Cross + Full-Blood Wagyu + Rambouillet cross lamb + Heritage pork + Berkshire Kurobuta), you want the option to reserve a whole or half animal share, or you want to read a guide on every cut before you buy it.

Wagyu side-by-side: cuts and price per pound

Wagyu is where SRF lives. Their American Wagyu is full-blood-cross stock (typically F2-F3 generations on the Wagyu side). Our F1 Wagyu Cross is a first-generation cross (Japanese Wagyu sire to Black Angus dam) and our Full-Blood Wagyu is registered 100% Wagyu genetics.

The pricing gap is real. SRF prices on the assumption that they're the recognized name and you're paying for the brand premium. We price on the assumption that we're new and need to earn the bite. F1 Wagyu Cross at $32/lb gets you the marbling of an American Wagyu at half the cost.

Where Snake River Farms wins

  • Brand recognition. If you Google "American Wagyu," they're the first result. If you're gifting wagyu to a steak snob, they know the name. Brand matters.
  • Track record. They've been shipping wagyu since 2003. Their cold-chain is dialed in. Their customer service has run a decade of edge cases. We just launched.
  • Production capacity. Multi-ranch sourcing means they rarely run out. We're a single ranch. Some cuts will be seasonally limited.
  • Marketing budget. Their food-magazine and chef-partnership presence is real. We're earning it.
  • Hot dogs, jerky, beef tallow, lots of SKU breadth on processed and specialty. They have a deep catalog of value-added products. We focus on whole cuts and shares.

Where Circle 7 wins

  • Six categories, one ranch. Black Angus + F1 Wagyu Cross + Full-Blood Wagyu + Rambouillet cross lamb + heritage pork + 100% Berkshire Kurobuta from a single Utah ranch. SRF is American Wagyu + Kurobuta only.
  • Lamb. SRF doesn't sell lamb. We sell Rambouillet cross lamb, the mild French Merino-derived breed, range-raised in Utah. If you want premium lamb DTC, your options are extremely limited and we're one of the few credible ones.
  • Whole and half animal shares. SRF doesn't do shares. We offer beef, lamb, and pork shares with custom cut sheets, 25% deposit holds, Aug 15 pickup window. Full share guide.
  • Price per pound. Across every comparable wagyu cut, we're 40-60% less than SRF. We're earning trust through price-quality ratio.
  • NAE (No Antibiotics Ever) verified. SRF uses antibiotics "per protocol when medically necessary." Our NAE program removes any animal that ever receives an antibiotic from our program permanently.
  • Single-ranch transparency. When a guest asks where the beef came from, our answer is "Mt. Pleasant, Utah; here's the address." SRF's answer is more complicated.
  • Cold chain without dry ice. Pelton-Shepherd gel packs in EFP liners. Easier to dispose, no CO2 risk, recyclable.
  • Editorial depth. 47 publish-ready guides with schema-density their journal section doesn't have. We write at NYT Cooking depth on cuts they don't even sell.

Where neither is the right answer

  • Real Japanese A5 Wagyu. Neither of us sells actual Japanese A5. SRF has "Black Grade" American Wagyu at the top. Our Full-Blood is American-finished. For real A5 imported from Japan, go to The Wagyu Shop, Crowd Cow Japanese, or specialty importers.
  • Crowd-Cow-style "shop by farm" multi-source curation. SRF is a brand; we're a brand. Crowd Cow is a marketplace. Different model.
  • Grass-finished only beef. Both of us grain-finish for marbling expression. If you want strict grass-finished, look at Force of Nature, ButcherBox grass-fed, or a local rancher near you.
  • Bulk subscription boxes. ButcherBox is built around the recurring box. We don't subscribe-and-forget; we sell cuts and shares.

Lamb (the gap SRF can't close)

SRF doesn't sell lamb. We do. Rambouillet cross lamb is a French Merino-derived breed developed in the 1930s. Hair sheep don't concentrate lanolin the way wool sheep do, so the meat tastes clean and mildly sweet rather than "lamby" or gamey. This is the lamb you want if you've had a bad lamb experience.

Half share $540 (~30 lbs at $18/lb take-home). Whole share $1,000 (~60 lbs at $16.67/lb). Individual lamb chops $18/lb. Cut sheet customizable.

Whole and half animal shares (the other gap)

SRF doesn't reserve animals. We do. The economics are simple: when you buy a half cow, you skip a lot of distribution margin and pay closer to the wholesale price. A half Black Angus is $3,146 for ~242 lbs of take-home cuts. That's ~$13/lb across ribeyes, NY strips, filet, sirloin, chuck, brisket, ground, and offal. SRF doesn't have anything close.

The trade-off: shares require freezer space and a 6-12 month commitment to cooking through it. If you want to try a single tomahawk without committing to a whole animal, individual cuts are better.

Shipping

SRF ships with dry ice. We ship with Pelton-Shepherd gel packs in insulated EFP liners. The gel-pack approach is easier to dispose, has no CO2 burn risk, and is recyclable. SRF's dry ice approach packs colder for longer transit. Both arrive frozen-solid in standard 2-day transit. Our free-shipping threshold is $200; theirs is $149.
